Substituting Lawyers

When you are not pleased with your current attorney for your New York Divorce

The divorce process is often frustrating and aggravating. It is not uncommon for litigated matters to take one or two years, or even longer on occasion. Emotions run high and frustrations even higher.

We tell all our clients at the outset that the cost of your divorce and how long it will take initially depends on four people – us, you, your spouse and his or her lawyer. If any one of those people is unreasonable, then your divorce will likely drag on for some time. This is one reason why we so strongly value the responsiveness of our firm – we do not want to ever contribute to the delays, and to the extent possible we wish to expedite the resolution of your matter. Those delays that are within our control will be avoided when at all possible. However, our system affords everyone their day in court, and our courts are heavily burdened.

At times clients wish to change lawyers, feeling that their lawyer is part of the problem. While we are all too often a parties’ second or even third lawyer we are almost always their last. While at times a change in lawyers is advisable, in can result in delays and additional expenses. This is one of many reasons why it's so important to choose your attorney carefully, at the outset of your matter.

However, should you find yourself in a situation where you believe that your matter has become to complex for your current attorney, or if you feel that your attorney is non-responsive, not sensitive to your needs, or simply has no interest in your matter, we are willing to meet with you. We will give you an honest assessment of your situation and on many occasions we have encouraged clients to remain with his or her current divorce lawyer. However, when it is clear that a matter has been neglected, when there is poor or no strategy, lack of responsiveness, or lack of skills to handle the complex issues of a divorce, we will at times agree to substitute a prior attorney and agree to represent such a client.

At the law office of Joseph Law Group, P.C., we are glad to do what we can to expedite matters, and save you time and money. Our experienced Garden City lawyers take all efforts to "stop the bleeding" for divorcing clients. If you are being drained of vital financial and physical resources by your spouse or his or her attorney, we can help you.
