We live in a digital world where it has become easier for people to access our private information. This lack of privacy can be particularly tough for those going through a divorce. In some cases, one party may try to access the other party’s information to gain an advantage during the divorce process. Fortunately, maintaining privacy is possible.
Change Your Passwords
If you are worried about your spouse having access to your private information, it is time to change your passwords. It is important that all your passwords are changed to something only you will know. Consider changing your passwords on your email accounts, social media accounts, and bank accounts. To achieve an extra layer of security, you may wish to set up two step-verification.
Avoid Social Media
Opposing counsel can use your social media activity against you in divorce proceedings. Social media is also a simple way your spouse may keep tabs on you. Avoid posting about your spouse, details about the case, or any revealing information that could potentially threaten the outcome of your case. Content that ranges from your dating life to have a couple of drinks on a night out can easily be used against you, especially in child custody battles.
Keep the Details to Yourself or Commit to Confidentiality
The most common way people get access to private information is when the parties involved share it themselves. To secure your privacy agree to only discuss the details of the divorce between each other. You may also choose to sign a confidentiality agreement; this is a legally binding contract where two parties agree to not share any of the information mutually agreed upon in the agreement.
Safeguard Your Mail
Consider creating a new email address as well as maintaining a PO box with the post office to ensure that your communications and correspondence with your attorney remain confidential.
